Grandma Grimshaw

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, this past Monday I decided to escape to my mom's house down in Cedar City with the girls. I have to admit that I was pleasantly impressed with how easy the five hour drive was on the way down. I have Thumbelina memorized now, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

We stayed the entire week and came back yesterday, Saturday. It was such a nice break from the norm. I have laundry up to my eyebrows, but my husband cleaned the house for me which made coming home much easier.

Some highlights of the trip:

Taking a field trip to a neighbor's farm
and petting the BIGGEST pigs I've ever seen.

Dominating everyone in Ticket to Ride & Scrabble.
Okay, except for that last game; Bradley destroyed us.
(I didn't make it to Wilno?)

Good food and uh, good food.

Hazel and I getting the giggles at bedtime like never before. She'd try to be serious for a quick second as she told me that Lottie's favorite part of the day were "pink signing time pickles."
Of course we'd both crack up as soon as she started saying it,
so that's what I thought she was saying.

Hitting up Robert's 50% off sale (did you know they're going out of business?).
My mom took the kids so I could shop and Hazel fell asleep in the cart
with her head resting on the diaper bag.

Bowling!
Except for that part where Hazel sneaked up behind me
and I nailed her in the cheek with my bowling ball.
Then that night I was carrying her to bed and I turned around too quickly
and smacked her head on the wall. Good thing they're resilient.
Happy Hazel before my bowling ball made contact with her face.

So I know this is an exaggerated pose, but my mom really is an amazing bowler.
No really, I'm trying to talk her into joining the local Cedar City ladies' league.
We actually call her BOWLINDA (her name is Belinda) because she's earned it.
She was throwing strikes left and right.
Amazing.
Bailey, working the alley.
Bradmeister
I, on the other hand, can't bowl. It actually really frustrates me because it seems like such a simple thing to throw a ball down a straight path to knock over some pins.
I didn't earn a cool nickname.

Hazel got this cool ramp to get her ball down the middle.
Her score wasn't too much below mine.

AND
Listening to Bailey play her cello and trying it out myself for the first time.
I got goosebumps when Bradley played "Amazing Grace" on his saxophone.
Hazel had to get her little hands on it as soon as he was done.

Thanks all for a great week!

Temple Square

March 20, 2010

David was out of town for a few days so we decided to meet him in Salt Lake the day he came home. We took the girls to Temple Square and it was simply beautiful. We have a picture from our wedding in front of the Salt Lake temple and Hazel calls it a castle. It was exciting to take her there and show her the statues of Joseph Smith receiving the priesthood and feel the peace that surrounds that place.

I was most excited about showing her the Christus in the Visitor's Center. Lately she's been asking a lot about stars, so when we walked up the curvy ramp to the statue of Christ, she had to reach up and touch one of the stars.

The first thing she said when she saw the Christus was "hi" and then "He's not talking."
We realized right after this family picture that Hazel had peed her pants in the car and was very...damp. David took her to the bathroom while I guided Charlotte down the ramp to the main floor. I soon realized my mistake with her choice of shoes for such a quiet and resonating locale. She was wearing these loud and obnoxious (but very cute) shoes that squeak with each step. It always makes me laugh because she has no idea that she is the one making those noises when she walks. She echoed all the way down that ramp,
"Squeak, squeak. Squeak, squeak."
As we were leaving (after 42 trips up and down the escalators), a group of kids going to prom walked in and Hazel's eyes lit up. She thought they were princesses. She wanted to go to the ball with them so badly. I don't blame her; a ball vs. going to bed at home? No brainer.

Remember those dishes? My man took care of it. I married well.

Girls, girls, girls

Sometimes they drive me nuts.
Sometimes they're the cutest little creatures I've ever seen.
Photobucket
Hazel's latest excuse when I ask her to do something she doesn't want to do is, "I'm too cold." Sometimes she'll say, "I'm too full!"

Photobucket
Some of Charlotte's first steps happened with Hazel holding her hands and pulling her along.

David brought these tulips home for us girls one day out of the blue. This picture was taken right before Hazel tried to hit Charlotte over the head with them.

Photobucket
It's amazing to me the places that Charlotte can climb into. Here she is in the laundry basket with Nacho. why not?

Photobucket
The DVD drawer. She couldn't get herself out of this one without help.

Charlotte is walking and the other day we were in the car with my mom and she said, "All done." After that she said, "here," clear as day. She signs "baby" by pretending to rock a baby in her arms; she signs "juice," "more," "mom," and "all done." She sleeps longer than all of us (only b/c David has work and I have Hazel).

Hazel can count to 20 (although 13 and 14 are a little shady). She LOVES hide and seek but when you count, she doesn't really hide; she just runs into the next room and watches you until you look up and see her. Then she screams and runs.
She told me the other day that Daddy isn't her prince; that her prince was someone else. I asked her what he's doing now and she said he was making her princess dresses.

My goodness, I love 'em.

Ice skating

February 27, 2010

The first time Hazel saw figure skating on t.v., she stopped in her tracks and said, "She's a princess!" I've been looking forward to taking her to the rink ever since. I couldn't believe how tiny her skates looked as we laced up and headed out to the rink. It was a lot of work for David and I, especially since we had to trade off because Charlotte wasn't allowed on the ice. Hazel could stand on her own, but needed a lot of support to move forward. I think she enjoyed herself in the beginning but then her legs got tired (mine too) and she was ready to go. I hope we can go back soon.

Remember in Notting Hill how Hugh Grant says "Whoopsy daisies" when he tries to climb the fence and falls down? Julia Roberts makes fun of him and says that the last people who used that expression were little girls with pigtails from the fifties. Well, I can't help but say it when my kids fall down; it just jumps out of my mouth. And now Hazel says it too whenever someone falls. "Whoopsydaisies!"

Poor little Lottie didn't love the whole experience. She just wanted her mom.

me vs. them

I feel like I'm in constant battle with my dishes. They refuse to stay out of my sink. I don't want to spend my precious nap time hour washing them. I don't want to. So the other day I just decided to stack them all nicely on top of one another, take a picture, and walk away. I showed them.

a quick escape

I really feel bad about being behind on my blog updates. Isn't that silly? I enjoy posting about our little life. Makes me feel like we're important. So the reason I'm behind--well, three reasons--is:

1) my husband is about 4 weeks away from never having to drive down to BYU for school again.
Lots of school=lots of time on the computer=less blogging for Janelle,
2) when I do get a quick moment with the computer, I pull up Photobucket and the internet freezes up.
Makes me want to pull my eyebrows out,
3) this past Monday I decided to run away to Cedar City for a nice week-long visit with my mom, her husband, and my little bro.

A few of the things I love about being at my mom's:
She'll take my crazies at 6:30 am so I can sleep in;
she always has delicious food in her fridge like fresh veggies and chunky blue cheese dressing, eggs straight from the chickens down the road, and a huge block of swiss cheese. bon appetite;
There's family and neighbors nearby that have lots of kids with cool toys that Hazel's never had like a battery-powered Barbie car and a trampoline. happy kids=happy mom
My mom spoils the life out of me and my girls.
We love every second of it;
And her house has the most beautiful cherry hardwood floors I've ever seen. They take my breath away every time I walk in.
So I'm here until Saturday when I will be brave and make the five hour drive back to Ogden where my husband will be waiting anxiously with an available laptop and speedy internet so I can update this blog on our ice- skating escapade, St. Patty's day, Jr. Miss, new neighbors, and Lottie's progress with communication. Such great adventures we've had in the Phipps family home.
Happy March 25th
