Edison Turns One

My first boy birthday party! We decided that since Edison's birthday falls on Pi Day (March 14th), we'd go with a "Pie and Tie" theme. We asked our invitees to wear a favorite necktie (or hair tie) and we had a great selection of delicious pies.
Oh how my heart sings for pie. I made a lemon cream with gingerbread crust (that turned rock solid but still tasted like heaven when you chipped it off with all your might). I also made two chocolate mousse pies and a key lime. Vicki brought a chocolate fudge berry pie that is one of my very favorites. It was amazing.
Edison's tie collection covered us girls.

Edison and his dad wore their matching bow ties I got them for Christmas.

We filled the trampoline with TONS of balloons (thank you Kevin and David for blowing them all up after dinner...)
I found this basketball hoop at DI for $1 and couldn't resist, but some of the stickers on top had been torn off. I asked Hazel to draw new faces where the old stickers would have been and she added Edison's name.

These were one of my favorite parts of the party decor--bow tie napkins. Easy and cute.

I've always wanted to use those cute straws...
Oh how I love having a little boy. (I know, my house is very yellow.)

And Edison's pie just might have become a new favorite of mine: orange cream pie. Wow. And he was our first child to truly DIG IN and get messy.

Happy Birthday Edison boy.
Here's what I wrote in my journal about this wee boy of mine:

"He stands up on his own quite a bit and can clap his hands at the same time. He will almost always wave to everyone at nap time and bedtime. He loves to play peekaboo and will even turn his head away and then look at you really fast--boo! He DANCES! Any time I push the nose on his lion walker and the music plays, he looks at me and starts dancing. Once I blasted some music on Pandora while we cleaned up the living room, and he couldn't stand it, he had to shake his head and move his body.  His hair is RED as ever and he prefers me over anyone (most of the time:) although he said Dada first. He signs "all done" and barks like a dog, but has not said my name yet. He can throw a ball with his dad and even started catching the ball with his hands pressed together in front of him. He is a TEASE to Eloise. Once we caught him with his hand raised way over his head, poised to hit her on the back, but he missed and fell over instead. Loves oranges and cut up grapes. He snuggles his face into mine because I kiss him so much. He runs away from you when you come to get him out of his crib and tries to hide, giggling. He always has and still does make the number three with his fingers. He likes to say "hi" sometimes by raising his arm up in the air and holding it there. Charlotte loves loves loves to hold him and bounce him (gently) on the trampoline, which he likes too. We all love him so much, it's difficult to hold him without feeling full to the brim and needing to kiss him all over. He has dimples and a cleft chin and he looks just like his Dad, just as I'd hoped. What a blessing to have Edison in our family."

Another week in the life

 Family night again...
Journal entry, Tuesday, March 12th: "Took kiddos to our favorite park to play on the swings before dinnertime. I love to swing on a swing. FEels so good, almost like you're a kid again. Hazel learned how to pump her legs at this park last summer and she's still so proud of herslef. She flips upside down and gets as high as me now. Love it."
Those little Tom's will only fit for so long.

I definitely remember running around with my pants around my ankles as a kid.
Even better on a trampoline.
Activity time with Charlotte: measuring. I remember doing this with Hazel like it was yesterday. One of my favorite activities.

Ah, Sunday

Here's my journal entry for this day: "Well, with last Sunday being so good, it was time to have a challenge again I guess. I pulled out the beautiful white dresses my mom bought the girls last spring becauset hey should still fit but Hazel felt that hers awsa too short. That's fair and I would have helped her find a new outfit, but she yelled at me instead  of talking to me, so it made for a tough morning in that way.  She chose her own outfit, which is fine, but it was a stripy knit dress with mismatched stripy tights that were way too small. I let her wear what she wanted but I exluded her from teh picture of her sisters that I took outside in their matchy matchy white dresses. Wish I had her in that pictures now...She was cute, just ornery."

Boy these two sure were cute though.

Day to day things...

Here's a photo dump from the last week. Here's a real glimpse of life at the Phipps' home...

Family Nights...

I don't think I ever tried this as a kid... Milk bubble ice cream.
Charlotte helping her sister with morning order.
This was the girls' first violin lesson with their new teacher, Sariah. Don't they look spiffy?

Every time we got to Costco, I feel like I need to take a picture of us because we are...so many.

I've never celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday before, but our good friends, Molly and Devin, had a nicely themed dinner prepared and invited us over! Our meal was supposed to resemble the trees in The Lorax.
I really do love these little reasons to throw a good party and celebrate.
Squishy pudgy yummy goodness.

On Saturday, I started painting our kitchen! It's amazing how such a daunting project isn't half as intimidating once you begin. And then you get that "high" that comes from good hard work. I'm really excited about the results.
While I painted, Edison roamed the kitchen and found some birthday suckers that he held onto for quite a while. He was a happy camper.
Ellie and Edison's first night together in the baby room...
They sure look tired don't they? I think we eventually moved Edison back downstairs on this first night because they both kept each other awake for so long...

 Still enjoying our indoor trampoline.
 Time for a double umbrella...
Finished the kitchen! It's all clean and white with pale blue walls. It's amazing how much of a difference a little bit of paint can make.

On Saturday, March 9th, we went to a bells concert with Kevin and Vicki. It was pretty neat to see the different sizes and the number of choirs that were here to perform. We forgot that Hazel had a classmate whose birthday party was at the same time as the concert, so when she found out she had missed the party, she said, "We missed the birthday party for the bells concert??" So funny.
It's a charmed and blessed life we live.
